A Brief Description of Johannesburg
I have lived most of my life in another country, therefore I am also still discovering a great deal about this country. I will be sharing with you what I have learnt so far. South Africa is easily one of Africa’s richest nations. There are eleven official languages spoken throughout the country. It has come a long way from its days of racial segregation – Apartheid. It is now known as the Rainbow nation because of its diverse culture which is made up of various ethnic groups.
Johannesburg, is the largest city in South Africa and known by locals as Jozi, or Joburg, or eGoli “City of Gold”, Joburg include Soweto (where most of the Joburg’s residents live) Sandton, Alexandra, Midrand, Lenasia and various other municipalities, which range from upmarket properties to make shift shelters.
The largest Retail centre in Johannesburg is Sandton City, which includes various upmarket stores, five star hotels restaurants, a library and the famous Nelson Mandela Square.
In line with the 2010 FIFA world cup, a number of changes and improvements took place in order to cope with the large influx of soccer fans. A new railway system The Gautrain, was constructed. It first linked – O R Tambo International Airport (the main airport) and Sandton City. To date the Railway is now linked to major Stations throughout Johannesburg and includes shuttle to certain stations, providing a number of residents with a reliable means of public transport.
In entertainment Johannesburg, has various forms of entertainment, ranging from Live concerts, and has hosted some of the world’s greatest bands which include U2 and Coldplay, Roxette, and upcoming shows like Usher Raymond and The Eagles. Locally Musicians like Yvonne Chaka Chaka, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Lira and Thandiswa Mazwai are celebrated both at home and internationally. The local film industry has also grown and continues to grow, each year the are number of local films produced and also some South African actors/actresses highly celebrated abroad like Charlize Theron
